PTSD And You

PTSD And You

🎗 Being traumatized is not only an restraint of being held back in the past; it is also a HUGE problem of not being fully alive in the present. 🧠 When experiencing trauma, the #hippocampus (responsible for memories and spatial mapping) AND the #thalamus, (integrates the experience into our usual perception of our lives), shut down. 💤

⚠️ That’s the reason traumatic experiences are recalled in bits and pieces. This is an example of why people who have suffered from war-related PTSD might become a totally different person when hearing fireworks. Certain smells, images, and sounds trigger people with this disorder. Since the traumatic experience has not been a normal part of their mental function before, it causes a huge block. They have no language to describe it. Fight, flight, or freeze becomes the default mode. 🖤

🌸 There ARE ways to heal from PTSD, though it is not expected for you to completely be “okay” in the end. Some examples of what I personally do to help myself are meditation, reading, outdoor time, controlled breathing, and classical music. What do YOU do to help calm your nerves, come out of a panic attack, or shake a flashback/nightmare? Sometimes just sitting in the dark can help, but for others it may make things worse. Leave some comments below and let’s help get this conversation going! Share tips, advice, personal experiences, and more. Just remember: you are NOT alone, you ARE enough, and you are a SURVIVOR not a victim. 💪🏼 I hope you enjoyed this article! 👋🏼🍞🧠
